Facebook is one of the internet giant companies and it can record and get all the information that we share. Facebook allows us to make most of our information that we share private. On Facebook, you can share your information with your friends or everyone. If you don’t want to share your information and your pictures with your friends or in public, you can click it private so other people will not see what you share. Facebook also gives you permission to control your privacy setting for each status update. You can change your privacy settings so that only your current friends in your Facebook list can find you. However, all Facebook users should be aware of their responsibilities and what they post about pictures, videos, and comments.
Facebook companies use the information about the stories we post, stories we share, and we can also react to the post and anything we share. It can also track us across the net, on several other websites that aren’t visibly connected to the social network. Facebook can get as much information as they want. Some people have no understanding about how facebook is tracking them even when they’re not on the platform. Everyone has control over how their Facebook is used. “Facebook uses online tracking technology to gather information that can help the company generate advertising revenue, and what you can do to limit such data collection” (John, 2018). When the data is collected and transmitted, web developers can control it. Facebook knows who you are and the website you go to if you’re logged into Facebook with the same brower. “It doesn’t matter if you’re on your phone or your laptop, your personal information can leave a digital trail of where you go online” (John, 2018).
If we have a Facebook account, Facebook can collect all the information from us through the tools. “Facebook meticulously scrutinizes the minutiae of its users’ online lives, and its tracking stretches far beyond the company’s well-known targeted advertisements” (Singer, 2018). FAcebook able to track and know our age, employer, relationship status, likes and location. It tracks users and also nonusers on other sites and apps. When we go to the other sites, Facebook can still record what we are doing all over the places. Facebook allows advertisers to target people by their ages or likes, the look-alike service, but advertiser does not get personal data about those facebook users. “Facebook requires outside sites that use its tracking technologies to clearly notify users, and it allows Facebook users to opt out of seeing ads based on their use of those apps and websites” (Singer, 2018).
One advantage of facebook is that we can hide our information so that others will not see it. That’s one of the advantages so others wouldn’t get the information. We’re able to save the information on Facebook and we can be the only person who can see it. If we want our friends to see our post, we can also do that as well. We have so many options to choose such as public, friends, specific friends, only me, custom, close friends, and friends except someone (someone we don’t want them to see our post). One disadvantage about Facebook is that some people use fake pictures to harass people. Sometimes they save other pictures and upload them on their facebook without the other user permission and the user doesn’t know someone else using their pictures. Some people want to share their pictures through Facebook but still don’t want others to steal their pictures and use them without permission. So, company should handle that more.
